White Bear Township has a rich history. Its very first inhabitants were the Dakota who lived on the shorelines of the Township’s many lakes. Territorial conflicts often arose between the Dakota and their enemies, including other tribes like the Ojibwe and Chippewa. Eventually, European-American settlers of German, Swedish and French-Canadian ancestry traveled from St. Paul to settle in the area. The Township was formally organized on May 11, 1958; the same day Minnesota became a state. It has transcended from a farming community, a resort town and a freestanding town into a cluster of suburban communities. |
Today, the Township is a community made-up of single-families with small areas of commercial development. It maintains an extensive network of neighborhood parks and trail systems, including a regional beach that provides lake access to the residents throughout the area. Its residents have maintained a continuity of growth while preserving its natural amenities.
